Urban living in old age – that’s what the Burano nursing home in the Dutch city of Zaandam located just 20 minutes away from Amsterdam makes a reality. The home has 144 flats and is tailored to meet the needs of its elderly residents.
he senior-friendly flats make it possible for residents to be independent, while the proximity to the nursing home provides them with safety and security. Large GEALAN S 9000 NL base system windows in the colours GEALAN-acrylcolor® anthracite grey and cream white brighten the flats and provide panoramic views.
Interaction was the central idea behind the complex’s design: the residential buildings are connected by an elevated deck, and the communal garden and the semi-open area between the buildings serve as gathering spots where people can sit together, converse and share. That’s how socially-oriented urban construction is done!

In the Hamburg-Hohenfelde park quarter, 32 attractive cooperative flats have been built as three buildings around a park in the last two years in two construction phases. In the complex, 26 apartments have been made accessible according to DIN 18040 part 2, the other 6 apartments are accessible according to DIN 18040 part 2 and are also designed for unrestricted wheelchair use. The housing area is built around a public park and the Alster tributary is just a few minutes away. As a conventional masonry construction, the building in the busy Muehlendamm area has been given a facade made from closed facing and fully glazed loggia which made it possible to have lounges and bedrooms on the louder side of the building.
The windows in the residential home on Alte Herrenhäuser Strasse in Hanover aren’t your standard format: the senior home loggias are corner-connected to each other over three storys, and the three common rooms, which are inviting and bright on the inside thanks to the floor-to-ceiling window to the city’, offer lovely views of the outdoor green surroundings.
The Gewandhaus concert house, Paulinerkirche church, Augustusplatz square – the Goldschmidtstrasse residential complex is located in Leipzig’s nicest neighbourhood. Every single square metre here is historically intriguing: a bookshop once flourished here almost 200 years ago before the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung’s (Central German Newspaper) publishing house and editorial office later occupied the space.
Light and dark contrasts are the central characteristic of the residential and commercial building located centrally in Kerpen’s district of Sindorf.
